# Using Discounts

When a discount is applied to an order, it's calculated against the order's discountable value — but a few things can reduce or exclude parts of the order from that calculation.

## Alcohol

In locations where local regulations don't allow discounts on alcohol, the alcohol portion of the order is excluded from the discountable value before the discount is calculated. Everywhere else, alcohol is included like any other item.

## Discount-Blocked Products

Products marked as **Block discount** are excluded from the discountable value, unless the discount code has **Overrides block discount** enabled — in which case it applies to the full order, including those products.

## Fees and Adjustments

Whether a discount also applies to fees and other adjustments (e.g., delivery fee, deposit return scheme, etc.) depends on the discount's **Includes adjustments** setting:

* If disabled, the discount applies to items only.
* If enabled, the discount applies to the full order, including adjustments.

Tips are never discounted, regardless of this setting.

## Discounts and Vouchers

When a customer uses both a discount and a voucher on the same order, the discount is applied first. The voucher's value is then calculated based on the discounted total.

## Using Discounts Together with Points and Vouchers

Discounts, points, and vouchers can all be applied to the same order — customers aren't limited to using just one. This still works even when the order includes alcohol, discount-blocked products, or a tip, since each value is calculated dynamically. See [Meals and Proportional Exclusion](/discounts/discount-block-web-app-only/meals-and-proportional-exclusion.md) for how this works when a meal contains an alcohol or blocked item.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://docs.bossithq.com/discounts/using-discounts.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
